Injection Molding Machines: Clamping Force Basics for Buyers
An injection molding machine is named by its clamping force — the tons holding the mold shut while molten plastic tries to blow it open. That single number decides which parts the machine can make.
The two-to-five tons rule
Estimate the projected area of your part — its shadow on the mold face, in square centimetres — and multiply by 2 to 5 tons depending on the plastic and wall thickness. Easy-flowing PP in a thick-walled bucket sits near 2; precision thin-wall parts in engineering resins push toward 5. A part shadow of 200 cm² therefore wants roughly a 400 to 1,000 ton range — which is why one factory rarely gets by with one machine size.
Buying used: where the truth hides
On a used machine, examine the tie bars for scoring and rust lines, ask the shot count the way you would ask a car's mileage, and watch a full dry cycle: the platen should move smoothly with no shudder at direction changes. Check the heater bands all reach temperature and the screw and barrel have measurement records — that pair wears like brake pads and costs like an engine.
Matched to the right tonnage, a well-kept used molding machine runs profitable parts for a decade; oversized, it wastes energy every cycle of its life.
