MIG, TIG or Stick? Choosing the Right Welding Machine
Welding machines are sold by process, and each process has a home ground. Choosing the wrong one costs you every single joint afterward.
Stick and MIG: the production pair
Stick (MMA) is the go-anywhere process: simple machines, cheap electrodes, tolerant of wind, rust and site work — the default for structural steel and repair in the field. MIG (MAG) trades that ruggedness for speed: a wire feeder lays down clean metres of weld indoors, needs less operator skill to look respectable, and dominates fabrication shops where the same mild-steel joints repeat all day.
TIG: control when it counts
TIG is the slowest and most demanding process — and the only choice when the weld must be precise or pretty: stainless food equipment, aluminium, thin sheet, sanitary pipe. The machine controls heat finely, the operator controls everything else. For a used TIG set, test the high-frequency arc start and check the torch and ground leads; those wear parts reveal how the machine lived.
Most Thai workshops end up with two machines: a MIG or stick set for production and repair, and a TIG for the work that pays a premium for looking perfect.
