Machine Hours vs Machine Age: Which Number Matters More?
Buyers anchor on the year of manufacture because it is printed on the plate. But two machines from the same year can be a decade apart in real condition — the separator is hours, and how those hours were spent.
Reading hours like a professional
A machining centre that ran a single day shift collects roughly 2,000 hours a year; a three-shift production machine collects 6,000 or more. So a 2015 machine may carry anything from 18,000 gentle hours to 60,000 hard ones. Ask what the machine made: years of light aluminium parts wear a spindle very differently from interrupted cuts in hardened steel. And treat a suspiciously low meter with suspicion — meters can be replaced along with control boards.
When age itself still matters
Age matters most for what surrounds the iron: control systems out of support, spare boards that no longer exist, safety standards that changed. A mechanically perfect machine with an orphaned controller can be a bargain or a trap depending on whether retrofits exist. The strongest purchase is boring: moderate hours, documented single-shift history, a control still supported by its maker — the machine equivalent of a one-owner sedan with a full service book.
In short: the plate tells you when it was born; the hours and the paperwork tell you how it lived. Buy the life, not the birthday.
