Used Forklift: Diesel or Electric? A Buyer's Comparison

Forklifts are the most traded used machine in Thailand, and the first fork in the road is fuel: diesel or electric. Both move the same pallets — the difference is where and how much they cost per hour.

Diesel: power and simplicity

Diesel trucks refuel in minutes, shrug off rain and rough yards, and handle heavy loads on ramps without complaint. Maintenance is familiar to any truck mechanic. Their weakness is exhaust — most food, pharma and enclosed warehouses will not allow them inside — and fuel cost that only goes up.

Electric: cheap hours, careful buying

An electric forklift costs roughly a third as much per operating hour and runs clean and quiet indoors. The catch when buying used is the battery: a traction battery pack can cost several hundred thousand baht to replace. Always ask the battery's age and cycle count, check the charger comes with the truck, and test a full lift under load — a tired battery shows itself fastest lifting high with a heavy pallet.

Rule of thumb: outdoor yard and mixed terrain, buy diesel. Indoor warehouse with daily shifts, buy electric but budget the battery. If the electric truck's price looks too good, the battery usually explains it.
